Do Student Filmmakers need permits for school projects?
Yes – for two reasons. First, getting a proper film permit for on location filming is a legal requirement in all jurisdictions served by FilmLA. Second, because getting a film permit is an essential first step for productions wishing to film on location (regardless of budget, size, or professional affiliation), most accredited film schools require that their students pull permits for student projects.
Do Student Filmmakers pay the exact same fees as professional productions?
No! FilmLA’s application fees are deeply discounted for students, and most jurisdictions also waive use fees for students who film at municipal properties such as parks or beaches. For information on which fees are reduced and/or waived, students are welcome to give FilmLA’s Solution Services team a call for free production planning advice.
Are students required to obtain production insurance?
Yes – and most schools make this easy. Proof of insurance is required by FilmLA and our client jurisdictions. In most cases, area film schools will already have a policy on file with FilmLA that meets all student insurance requirements. If a student’s school does not provide insurance, the student applicant will need to obtain insurance independently. Students are encouraged to call FilmLA and speak with an Insurance Specialist if they have any questions or would like to check their school’s current insurance on file.
What do I need to provide FilmLA to qualify for a student permit?
To be eligible for student fee reductions and waivers, students must meet the following criteria:
- The student must be enrolled in an accredited higher education institution.
- The project must be specifically for course credit.
- The project may not be used commercially and/or the school must retain all rights.
To prove all of the above, the student must provide a Certification Letter emailed to FilmLA by an authorized school official, and also provide a copy of their student ID. For more information on the student certification letter requirements and the application process (including deadlines, parking and notification requirements as well as other permit considerations,) students should visit the ‘How to Get a Student Film Permit’ section of the FilmLA Knowledge Base.
How do Students apply for film permits?
Students apply for their filming permits the same way profession productions do: by registering for an account and submitting their applications online through the MyFilmLA permit system. Applications are due by the 10:00 am deadline for the jurisdiction(s) you seek to film in. A list of jurisdiction deadlines can be found in the ‘Area Requirements’ section of the FilmLA Knowledge Base.
