Research

Integral to FilmLA’s work is ongoing research into the benefits that local filming brings to the Los Angeles region. To that end, we maintain an internal research division devoted to the production, collection and dissemination of information regarding the U.S. film production economy and global production trends.

Provided you cite FilmLA as your source, you are welcome to use all information, charts, graphs, etc. that appear in our reports. Copies of higher-resolution images or graphics from recent reports can also be made available.

FilmLA reports are an invaluable resource in helping us understand trends across production activity and the broader entertainment landscape in LA. They allow us to make more informed decisions and keep a pulse on the industry.

West Coast Based Institutional Investor

As the official film office for the City and County of Los Angeles, FilmLA has long been a critical partner in managing on-location production and serving the complex needs of a dynamic, multi-jurisdictional industry. FilmLA’s comprehensive services have enabled our region to remain one of the preferred filming destinations.

Equally important is the work of FilmLA’s research division, which plays an indispensable role in documenting and analyzing production trends across the region. FilmLA produces a suite of timely, data-driven reports, including:

Quarterly and Annual On-Location Production Reports, which track shoot days by production category and provide insight into production volume and seasonal shifts; The Scripted Content Study, which offers detailed analysis of where film and television projects are made, how Los Angeles compares to other production hubs, and the economic implications of shifting market share; and The Sound Stage Production Report, which presents data on stage occupancy and usage trends, giving a window into infrastructure demand and industry dynamics.

At the LAEDC’s Institute for Applied Economics, we have consistently drawn on FilmLA’s research to support our own work. This includes economic analyses of the California Film and Television Tax Credit Program, assessments of infrastructure capacity, and broader evaluations of the industry’s role in the regional economy. FilmLA’s data has grounded our findings and helped us advocate effectively for policies that protect and grow high-quality jobs in this creative sector.

We deeply value our partnership with FilmLA and commend the professionalism, transparency, and analytical rigor that characterize the organization’s research output. We look forward to continued collaboration and alignment in support of our shared goal: ensuring that Los Angeles remains a global leader in film and television production.

FilmLA has become an invaluable resource for Los Angeles Center Studios. We rely on the quarterly film production reports to track features, TV, commercials. Collaborating with the other studios to assist in your completion of the annual sound stage production reports allows us all to share real production and utilization of the stages in southern California. Without those two vital services, we would be leasing sound stages in a vacuum with no real understanding of how much production is in town. Additionally, frequent phone calls and the sharing of information between FilmLA and Los Angeles Center Studios has provided real insight and aided in decision making for us many times. We believe in FilmLA and will do what we can to continue and support your efforts.

President, Los Angeles Center Studios

FilmLA research has been a great resource to help validate and bolster our own data, specifically as we communicate California production market conditions to our financial partners. The Sound Stage Production reports are a window into a market segment that typically has very limited visibility and, along with the Film Production reports, provide an exceptional real time view of the activity in the LA market
