FilmL.A. recently served as co-sponsor of the Sundance NEXT FEST which took place in Downtown Los Angeles. The Sundance NEXT FEST is a summer festival celebrating film, music, and the renegade spirit of independent artists. This year’s festival marked FilmL.A.’s third year as a sponsor.
This year, the festival featured six bold new films, previously screened at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah last January. Each film screening was paired with a special musical performance or a Q & A session with filmmakers and the luminaries that inspired them. The festival also featured master classes and other panels
2016 marked the fourth year of Sundance NEXT FEST. This year, festival organizers added a new outdoor venue next to the main screening venue, the Theatre at Ace HOTEL. Originally opened in the 1920s as the United Artists Theater, the venue offered festival goers the chance to grab a drink and mingle with filmmakers and other film enthusiasts.
Closing night featured the screening of the “Greasy Strangler” a cult-film that filmed entirely in Los Angeles. In the film, “Big Ronnie” and his son “Brayden” meet lone female tourist “Janet” on Big Ronnie’s Disco Walking Tour. A fight for Janet’s heart erupts between father and son, and the infamous Greasy Strangler is unleashed. The film is directed by Jim Hosking, written by Jim Hosking and Toby Harvard. The film was followed by a live performance by Big Freeda, the Queen of New Orleans bounce music.
